2023 Subaru Outback Earns Top Safety Pick

The 2023 Subaru Outback has been acknowledged with a Top Safety Pick+ award by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Subaru emphasizes all-round protection with a bolstered body structure and the latest version of Eyesight Driver Assist Technology.

To date, Outback has earned 14 consecutive IIHS Top Safety awards and maintained top-tier "Plus" status since 2013.

"This is a testament to our commitment to our customers that we will provide them with vehicles set to the highest safety standards year over year," said Thomas Doll, president at Subaru.

Reinforced Crash Protection for Occupants

The 2023 Outback has evolved with a reinforced Subaru Global Platform. The vehicle body absorbs 40 percent more energy in front and side collisions than its previous model. It also comes with 70 percent extra toughness in front-suspension rigidity.

Safeguard features include a collection of eight airbags such as dual-stage front airbags, front-seat side-impact airbags and side-curtain airbags with rollover sensors for front and rear occupants.

Fortified front seats and energy-absorbing headrests reduce the severity of whiplash neck injuries. Height-adjustable pre-tensioning belt webbing ensures individuals are retained in their seats during extreme collisions.

A reinvigorated tensile steel structure bolsters the roof, side pillars and floor together to dispel crash energy from the passenger cabin.

Improved Driver Assist Technology

Updated Eyesight Driver Assist Technology is standard on all models. The advanced systems provide additional awareness and occupant safety.

Pre-Collision Braking avoids frontal crashes by applying full-braking force in emergencies. Pre-Collision Throttle Management minimizes vehicular damage by reducing engine power before impact.

Automatic Emergency Steering is also a brand new feature for the 2023 Outback. It helps drivers avoid accidents by providing autopilot steering and braking support.

Additionally, by including a wide-angle camera to the traditional dual-camera Eyesight system, drivers now have a sweeping view of pedestrians and cyclists at intersections.

For a vehicle to earn a Top Safety Pick+ honor, it must score high ratings in six-crash categories. Vehicle must also have an "Advanced" or "Superior" score in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian crashes.  "Good" or "Acceptable" points in headlight technology are prerequisites across all models.
